I guess Friday is different to other days because you get to reflect on your week and remind yourself of some of the successes and challenges you've had, some wins, some expected, some 'from out of the blue' and accepted graciously. A chance to look at how you are doing to plan, ahead or behind, and also a chance to reflect on some of the bigger picture stuff that is always on your mind but you just find the day to day of your job stops you from really focusing on important things.
How do you deal with these tasks, plans, goals that you know will really move you and your business forward, but never get their rightful place in your pecking order because there's always something else to do. Here's one idea.
I was with a guy called Nigel Botterill the other day, he has written a book 'Botty's rules', he's a serial entrepreneur, he helps businesses with their marketing activity to grow revenue. I have known him and his business for years, and he is someone that always makes me stop and think. Yes you're right, he is seriously annoying.
Anyway, I was moaning about 'never getting around to do the things I want to do as I'm too busy doing what I need to do etc etc...'
This is his story. Imagine. You would love to take the kids to Disney in USA next year, it's something you've always wanted to do, you know they would love it, especially at their age. It's something you and your wife have dreamed of.
But it's expensive, especially during school holidays, and anyway other things always come up, so instead you do something else, Majorca, camping, Cornwall, you always have a lovely time.
But wouldn't it be great to take the familly to Disney. Now lets assume for the sake of the story, that you know through hard work and a bit of sales success you could afford it, it's a stretch but you believe you could do it, it's not going to be easy, but you know you could do it.
Sit down with your wife and kids now and tell them that next summer you are all going to Disney, get them to tell all their friends, get them excited about it, make a plan, where you want to go, what are you going to do. You then tell your family and friends that's what you're going to do next year.
Making this commitment, publishing it, writing it down means it will be your top priority to achieve it, there's no way you are going to let your kids down, your wife will kill you. It will be your focus, you will manage your plan, you will track your plan to make sure you're on target, you will do whatever it takes to make this become a reality. It simply WILL happen.
Oh yes, and of course, you have to book the trip NOW!
Simple, effective and really BRAVE. But if it means that much to you, then it will guarantee you will do it.
So that's the essence of my thought for this Friday. I am sitting here now making sure my business has had a good week this week, and next week's plan looks fine. But overriding these day to day things. I am making sure I am on target for my own Disney, which I won't bore you with now, but suffice to say, it's a stretch, it's going to be hard, but I am not going to fail as it really is that important to me.
So that's my thought for the day. Hey ho, back to work.
